If you have just typed "quick weight loss diets" into your search engine and landed on this page because you are trying to lose weight fast ... then I have some news for you! Quick weight loss diets such as the 500-calorie diet or fad diets like the 'cabbage soup diet' very seldom work out in the long term. In fact, if you follow a quick weight loss diet for too long, it can not only have an adverse effect on your health but also crush your hopes for a slimmer figure. Quick weight loss diets are well known for causing a person to eventually put on MORE weight than they initially lost.

•        However, special diets for quick weight loss do have some uses, such as:
•        needing to lose a quick few pounds for a special occasion
•        losing weight fast for critical health reasons

But that's about all - and treat even these reasons with caution. Unless directed to
do so by a qualified medical doctor, you should never continue a diet for quick weight loss beyond a ten day period as the maximum. And remember that putting your body into this kind of 'starvation mode' can cause you to gain more weight in the long run.

Huh! "So if I go on very low-carb quick weight loss diet and eat very few calories I can still put on weight?"

No! Not quite. In the short term you can lose weight. But you can definitely in the longer term lose more weight on a 1200 calorie diet than a 500 calorie diet.

So here is the "skinny" on diets for quick weight loss and why you should exercise caution if you are thinking of doing one.

The human body is basically a carbon/oxygen engine and although it has been evolving for millions of years, it's not very intelligent; consequently it can't distinguish the difference between an intentional restrictive diet and "being starved".

Yes, that's correct: some diets for quick weight loss erroneously trigger the body into a self-preservation condition known as "starvation mode". It's a survival mechanism built into its genetic structure to help preserve its stored fuel (the fat which you are trying to get rid of!) The idea is that by burning up less stored fat, the organism can survive longer through hard times such as the famines and food shortages which our ancestors frequently suffered.

Now of course it has been a long time since the modern developed world has experienced a drastic food shortage, but bodies are not terrifically good with keeping up with current affairs and modern history. So when you cut back on calories too harshly you might not be aware that your body will think, "Uh-oh ... there's hard times on the horizon! -- I had better get prepared and HANG ON TIGHT TO WHAT I'VE GOT IN STORAGE" (ie what is around your waist!)

And you will probably find yourself suffering from the well-knowncrash- dieter's 'carbohydrate craving' whereby anything starchy or sugary looks desperately necessary RIGHT NOW.

So, in a naïve attempt to preserve fuel (fat) the body starts to slow down its metabolism and then starts to burn (and consequently reduce) your muscle mass instead of your fat. And your metabolism and your muscle mass are the very two things that you are going to need for long term stable weight loss. Meanwhile, you're tempted by every sugary carb that comes within a hundred yards.

So can you see the paradox that you can get into by using diets for quick weight loss? Physiologically, it's like being trapped between the "devil and the deep blue sea". You're trying to lose the fat, but your body won't let it go. In such a struggle, sooner or later something is going to give - either your waist line will expand, or your overall health is going to deteriorate.

And one last word of warning: if you do decide to do a diet for quick weight loss it is important that you try and maintain you bodies requirements for other nutrents such as vital vitamins and minrels
